This is one of the best and complete Solar Starter Kits that you can buy. (batteries are included) Perfect for the outdoors like fishing or hunting, camping, RV’s, and a FREE or emergency source of energy for your home.
No matter where you live in the United States, there is always a possibility of a long term power outage. (more than a day or two) This Solar Kit will at least keep your refrigerator running during a power outage. If you have this Solar Kit hooked up to an appliance or two (like your refrigerator) it will keep running even when the power goes out. If you don’t get enough sunshine in your area to keep the batteries charged up to provide power to your appliance all day and night you might consider using a windmill or wind turbine along with the Solar System. If the power is out and the batteries go dead in your Solar System, you can always hook up your car battery to the system inverter to keep it running. Just make sure that you keep starting up and running the engine in your car to keep the battery charged up. May be a bit inefficient, but in an emergency you do what you have to.
If you are handy with tools you can always make your own emergency gasoline powered generator. All it takes is a metal frame, nuts and bolts to hold a small gasoline engine with a horizontal shaft and a power generator (or an automotive alternator), 12v automotive battery, a couple of pulleys, a fan belt and a power inverter and some small electrical cables. (I do have some of the items on this site) You can also convert a gasoline engine to run on either natural gas or propane. With a little planning you can be well prepared for the next emergency.
If you go with a portable backup power generator, it will cost you a lot more than this Solar Kit and when it’s not in use, you will also have to find a place to store it, you will also have to keep up the maintenance on it as well even if not in use. When you do need to use it you will have to drag it out, check the oil and fuel it. Then you will have to find a good place to run it, (so that the carbon monoxide from the exhaust does not find its way into the house) drag out the extension cords and plug them up to it. Once it’s all hooked up and running you still have to keep fueling it up as needed. That means that you will have to buy and store the fuel to keep it running. (or you have to hook it up to your existing natural gas or propane) You also have to worry about the direction of the wind and the carbon monoxide from the exhaust not to mention the noise that it’s going to make as well.
If you go with a permanent standby generator, you will have the convenience of having power on demand as soon as the power goes out. The cost of this convenience is quite high. On average the cost for a standby generator will start out at about $10,000. And you will also have to get permits to have it installed and you also have to have someone to install it as well not to mention the fact that you must have either natural gas or propane on the premises to keep it running and you still have to keep up the maintenance on it as well even if not in use. That is just more money out of your pocket just to keep the lights on.
Did I mention that Solar Energy does not require a lot of maintenance, does not admit carbon monoxide does not make lot of noise and best of all is free and renewable! Once it’s installed and running you won’t have to find a place to store it because you will be using it every day to power up an appliance or two! You may want to check with the municipality were you live at to find out what is the largest Solar System you can have without a permit. In the long run the Solar Kit will end up paying for itself, just from the savings from your electric bill alone.
